I am a director. Always have been, I think. As a modern dance choreographer, folks used to tell me that I sounded like a director - I just seem to see the world that way.
I like intimate work, work that tells small stories about who we are and what makes us human. Sometimes I tell these stories in small ways, two characters walking and talking on an empty stage. Sometimes I tell them in big abstract ways that involve multiple devices and actors to express one person's experience. Getting at what is going on inside is the most important thing to me. A big device is just a way to tell a small story.
I think it is my role to explore difficult ideas and to share what I learn in a way that allows audiences to explore as well. I prefer to do this in an environment where everyone feels empowered and inspired to do their best work.
